Zeldman renewed

Zeldman once said that he'd try and keep it under 4 new re-designs per year. Well, the old List Apart lasted way longer than that. Here's the new one, with a brand spanking new publishing system, too!

Design Simply!

"A mass market exists for the mobile Internet, but it will remain untapped until designers make simpler Web pages that can be viewed properly on handsets"

This is just a quick extract from a very smart article by Daniel Frykholm.

It is really difficult to explain to your client that the flashy ideas he has for his site are going to harm it more than help. But if we think that 75% of all Internet accesses in the near future will come from non-PC devices I think it's time to sit up and take interoperable design seriously.

Stabdards based XHTML and clean and simple design are a first step in the right direction. Or offer different style sheets for the user to choose his preferred, or funtional view style.

No CSS2 in IE7

Microsoft, makers of IE, the only browser out there which doesn't understand HTML or CSS and fails to render standards based markup on a consistent basis have the cheek to say this:

'One partner said that Microsoft considers CSS2 to be a flawed standard and that the company is waiting for a later point release, such as CSS2.1 or CSS3, before throwing its complete support behind it.

For the moment I am simply lost for words. This is so unbelievably short sighted and downright ignorant that no-one in their right mind can even answer to this.

IE7 Details

So we have some new details about what IE7 will feature...and gues what...there's no surprise at all. And guess what more: Not even a mention about standards and support of properly coded HTML and CSS. Will we be served the same mess again, just a little more bloated and under the "security" banner of the current company campaign?

Domain Name Bidding

Here's a very interesting article by Mike Davidson explaining in detail how domain name expiration works and how you can land a purchase for an expiriring domain name. If you have a couple of hundred bucks to spare and nerves of steel this might very well be the guide you've been looking for.

New Google Toolbar

We all love Google's toolbar. It tells us the page rank of all the pages we create or optimise and regularly induces moment s of joy or grief depending on the changes caused by the last "Google Dance".

However the latest update to our handy toolbar also includes auto links. Meaning that Google inserts links into your webpage whether you put one there or not. For example an ISBN number on your site will automatically be linked to the corresponding sale on Amazon. Or if you have your address on the site it will automatically link to the corresponding Google Map Page.

Not nice if you like to be in control of your site! Thankfully you can download a handy Javascript to kill the feature on your site.
