web design bullet Accessibility and Functionality Information

This web site can be viewed in different formats to guarantee ubiquitous accessibility, cross platform compatibility and functionality which welcomes all users and user agents. This flexibility provides for a service without discrimination and attempts to serve the largest potential group of users. It creates barrier free access.

Three formats are available and if you have cookies enabled your choice of format will be stored for your next visit and automatically loaded when you re-visit. Formats can be changed "on the fly", there is no need to re-load the page:

  • Standard, the graphic design view: This is the pixel perfect translation of the graphic visualisation the web site was conceived in. It is a graphic design brought to the web, the site default and optimised for the most common browser and screen settings. Everyone who accesses the site with a desktop computer and is happy to accept the designers view will default to this format.
  • Liquid, the web view: Visitors who prefer browsing with many browser windows open, like to re-size windows, have side bars loaded in their browser or just simply like to fill their screen horizontally instead of seeing the fixed width restraint should choose this option. It automatically makes the design adapt to most screen resolutions and browser window sizes without the need for horizontal scrolling. On higher resolution screens this means that more information is visible at a glance, on low resolution or small screens it means the information in visible without scrolling. This format empowers the user to view the site the way he likes as opposed to a designer imposed format.
  • Accessible: Even more flexible and back to the basics. This format contains no images, no Flash. It is text only and can therefore be viewed by anyone with an internet connection from internet capable mobile phones, PDAs to text only browsers, screen readers or simply those who access the site via modem and are not willing to wait for images to load. This version also features larger letters to increase readability.

Making these formats available creates barrier free access and provides accessibility for:

  • Text only browsers
  • Old and outdated browsers
  • Slow Internet connections such as modems or mobile devices
  • Small displays such as PDAs, Pocket PCs mobile phones or old PC monitors
  • Screen readers used by blind or visually impaired visitors
  • Mice controlled by head, feet or mouth used by physically impaired people
  • Keyboard only navigation for those who cannot use a mouse for technological or physical reasons
  • Those who simply wish to view the site the way they are most comfortable instead of being constrained by designer imposed limitations.

In addition all formats feature re-sizeable, non fixed size fonts to accommodate for user preference. The Flash banner is non-intrusive which means it will not require the installation of the plugin or forms an essential part of the the web site. Those who surf without plugins enabled simply will not know it's there.

All code, HTML and CSS is valid according to W3.org recommendations for cross platform compatibility, accessibility norms. This makes this web site part of an interoperable, accessible, flexible and functional world wide web.
