Although fairly simple in the end result logo design is amongst the most challenging tasks for a designer. He has to capture the identity and image of a company, product or person in one more or less simple image and express all the dynamics associated with it. Some clients have a very clear idea of what they want to see in their logo, sometimes there is only a limited number of design options applicable to a particular brand and sometimes the designer keeps pushing shapes and letters around until something just clicks. In all cases there are some commonly agreed rules which help the client make up his mind on how he wants to present himself and help the designer to approach the project. The perfect logo design is the perfect compromise between simplicity, dynamics, expressiveness and harmony of colours and shapes.
Your logo will be tailored for high quality output in black and white, 2 or 3 colour output as well as high colour print, web and multimedia presentations. All of these require different optimizations, but all are essential for the whole range of uses in the virtual and real world.
Various logo design types serve different purposes, we will illustrate these with well known examples:
- Web Logos, dot com style: These offer more graphical possibilities as the web allows for more colourful and elaborate creations. If your presence is on the web mainly we can play with shades, gradients and colour effects not so suitable for mass print or black and white.
- Icon style logos: Icon style logos express their message mostly through a simple, eye catching but highly expressive icon graphic. They are designed to stand anywhere independently and to be recognisable out of context.
- Text based logos: Text based logos center the attention of the viewer around the arrangement and style of letters. Often a long winding task which includes playing with different fonts and styles or the creation of entirely new fonts to grasp the statement of the particular company or product. Most of the biggest brand names with this kind of logo use their own custom fonts.
- Illustration style: Illustration style is the most complex kind of logo, more like a drawing itself. It requires a skilled illustrator to produce the drawing and prepare it for mass reproduction. Many large companies refrain from this style as mass reproduction becomes too expensive with the complexity and amount of colours involved. Smaller businesses however often favour this style as the detail in the illustration can capture their company image more expressively.
- Cartoon style: With similar requirements and pros and cons as illustration style, cartoon type logo designs are more elaborate and expressive in design.
- Art/Creative: The film industry, music industry, fashion industry or artists and related companies often allow for more latitude in the designs. This applies to the design style itself as well as the ideas expressed in a creative logo
